Marine Operations Manager

Position Mandate

The Marine Operations Manager will provide crucial leadership in overseeing and coordinating all aspects of marine operations within the company, predominately operating a fleet of Tug and Barges conducting marine logistics services throughout East Africa. This includes managing vessel scheduling, crewing, safety protocols, regulatory compliance, and budgetary considerations. The manager is responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient execution of maritime activities, while also contributing to strategic planning and business development efforts.

Key Responsibilities

Vessel Management

  • Oversee all preparation, planning and supply for the readiness of all vessels.
  • Coordinate with technical and engineering teams to address any vessel-related issues promptly.

Crew Management

  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and certification requirements for all crew members.
  • Develop and implement crew scheduling and rotation plans.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Work with the DPA to ensure compliance to local, national, and international maritime regulations.
  • Liaise with regulatory bodies and maintain necessary permits and licenses for vessel operations.

Safety and Risk Management

  • Implement and enforce safety protocols, procedures, and best practices for all marine operations.
  • Oversee annual schedule for safety drills, inspections, and audits to identify and address potential hazards.

Budgeting and Cost Control

  • Develop, monitor, and manage the marine operations budget, ensuring cost-effective operations.
  • Identify opportunities for cost-saving initiatives and efficient resource allocation.

Communication and Coordination

  • Act as a liaison between the marine operations team, shore-based staff, and external stakeholders.
  • Foster effective communication channels to ensure smooth and efficient operations.

Emergency Response and Crisis Management

  • Develop and implement contingency plans for emergency situations at sea.
  • Lead the response efforts during emergencies and crisis situations.

Environmental Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations, including waste disposal, pollution prevention, and sustainable practices.

Performance Monitoring and Reporting

  • Monitor company key performance indicators (KPIs) for marine operations and regularly report on performance against targets.

Qualifications & Attributes

  • Fluent in written and spoken English
  • Degree Qualification in relevant field
  • Proficiency in relevant software and systems used for marine operations.
  • Proven experience Min 5 years within Marine or Logistics operations, or;
  • 5 years sea time as Deck or Engineering Officer
  • Strong knowledge of maritime regulations, safety standards, and industry best practices.
  • Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to make critical decisions in high-pressure situations.
